5 Benefits of a Thermoplastic Roofing System

Thermoplastic roofing, also known as “TPO” roofing, with a light-colored thermoplastic membrane is particularly popular for larger commercial buildings. This membrane provides plenty of advantages for businesses that are looking for new roofing solutions, especially in areas that get a lot of sun and heat (which can damage rooftops over time). If you have a flat or low-slope commercial building, check out the primary advantages of using or switching to a thermoplastic material.

Long-Term Cost Savings

TPO membranes are easy to install thanks to the wide membrane sheets that can be quickly rolled out across a rooftop. The materials themselves are also affordable, which means the initial cost of the project and labor involved is often lower than alternative projects. However, long-term savings are also common, as TPO membranes tend to be low maintenance, easy to clean, and simple to repair if something goes wrong.

Energy Efficiency

We mentioned that thermoplastic membranes are typically white or lighter in color. This is important, especially across large buildings that need to be cooled. That white exterior will help reflect sunlight and thermal energy back into the air, rather than letting it into the building. That extra heat can rapidly raise cooling bills for a building, but when it can’t make it inside, you start to see a lot of energy savings. Of course, this is particularly effective in warmer areas or places where you tend to see a lot of solar heat during the summer.

Durability

Several important factors make TPO roofs durable. First, reflecting solar energy doesn’t just help save on cooling costs, it also means the roof is absorbing less solar radiation, which leads to better longevity. Second, TPO roofs are particularly flexible when it comes to additions, including adding carbon fillers, fiberglass and other materials so the roof is better prepared to stand up to harsh weather and other problems. Finally, TPO materials are available at a variety of thickness ratings, usually up to 80mm. Thicker is almost always better in this circumstances because it helps protect against punctures more effectively and increased durability even further.

Simple & Quick Installation

You have a couple of different options for installation these membranes, including mechanical attachment or full adherence. The advent of heat welding means you can get the best adherence possible without slowing down the roof installation project, which is excellent if you are on a sharp timetable but don’t want to sacrifice on installation quality.

ENERGY STAR® Requirements are No Problem

Looking for a rooftop that qualifies for ENERGY STAR® ratings or similar standards? TPO easily meets or exceeds the EPA ENERGY STAR® requirements. TPO materials are also 100% recyclable when the time comes to replace them, making it one of the greenest options for commercial rooftops!
